Pinterest is a great and easy way to share things you like with others, even for businesses. It is very easy to set up an account and once you have an account you create “mood boards”, which are like your categories or topics. Then, you can either search for a specific top or browse the categories of the site to find “pins”, which are the links themselves, by others. If you like the pins you find, you can pin them to your own profile under each one of your mood boards. You can also use the “Pin It” button to create a new pin from any website that you find. I really like how easy it is to use Pinterest and to share things with others. The only thing I dislike is that some pins that people put on Pinterest do not link back to the website, so it is just an image. I think Pinterest is very useful to individuals and to businesses, and I will definitely use it again. I could use the board that I created to get ideas and tips on how to create an attractive and useful website for the client. The article, “How to Use Pinterest for Business” by Hubspot has a few suggestions for marketing: feature visual content, host a contest, add the “Pin It” button to your website, and add links in the descriptions of your pins. “Typography is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make the language it forms most appealing to transparent learning and recognition” (Codeboxr). Trends in typography are always changing and evolving, but here are a few examples of the current trends being used on the web. Larger fonts are being used because desktop screens are becoming larger, giving web designers more screen to fill and design. Another new thing with typography is that “bold” is no longer the only other font weight available. There are many different weights ranging from “ultra light” to “ultra bold.” Many web designers are also using the larger fonts and more letter-spacing to achieve a very minimal designs to get the point across without all of the fancy graphics. Web fonts service providers, such as Google Web Fonts, allows designers to use pretty much any font, which means websites can be more unique and eye catching (http://codeboxr.com/blogs/latest-trends-in-web-typography-2014). Google Web Graphics is one method that is being used to implement typography on the web, but there are other methods as well. A few of the other methods being used are CSS3 @font-face, Cufon Font Replacement, Scalable Inman Flash Replacement, Facelift Image Replacement, and Fahrner Image Replacement (http://www.hotscripts.com/blog/custom-fonts-on-your-site/). These different trends in typography and methods used to implement typography are drastically changing the way web designers use typography and are allowing them to be more creative when designing websites.
When taking digital photos it is important to remember the three P’s: Point, Position, and Placement. Point stands for point of view, which means the camera angle which the photo was taken when taking digital photos. A few examples of point of view are low angle shot, high angle shot, horizontal shot (landscape), portrait shot (vertical), and slant shot (angled). Position means the position of the camera in relationship to the subject or focal point. The three basic camera positions when taking digital photos are close-up shot, mid-shot, and wide shot. Placement stands for the placement of the subject/focal point in the frame of the photo. A few ways to use placement to make the photo more interesting when taking digital photos are to give the subject more dominance, give the subject less dominance, use the rule of thirds for placing the subject, or use the rule of odds to add balance. For the photos in this post, I used my smartphone camera which is an Apple iPhone 5s. A few special features about the camera on my phone are different filters, an HDR option, the normal rectangular size, a square size, and a panoramic option. I chose three different photos as examples of the three P’s. The first photo is of myself with others at a Chief’s football game. This photo is an example of a horizontal (landscape) shot as the point of view. The second photo is a close up shot of my dog, Juneau. This is ran example of camera position. The last photo is of a giraffe at the zoo. This is an example of using the rule of thirds for placement because I placed the giraffe in the top right corner of the frame. These are just a few examples, but try out some on your own and don’t forget to use the three P’s when taking digital photos!
Twitter, also known as micro-blogging, could be a very effective tool for businesses. Using Twitter as an online branding tool allows you to promote your brand, monitor what people are saying about your brand, and interact with your fan base. A few organizations that have made an effective use of Twitter are Starbucks, Google, and Adobe. Some pros about using Twitter as a branding tool are that you can announce upcoming events, promote other content that you’ve created such as webinars, and develop direct relationships with bloggers and journalists for possible PR placement. Using Twitter could be a great thing, but it also has a few cons such as having to learn how to use it correctly from a business perspective and possibly using it the wrong way. An example of using it the wrong way would be to not sounding professional and making it seem like your business is just a joke. I personally enjoy using Twitter (https://twitter.com/DesignsByKylee) and think it could be a huge help with networking in the future. A summary of what I have learned about writing for the web in a single Tweet would be, “Keep sentences short, use lists if possible, use lots of headlines, and stick to the point.”
Have you ever looked at a website and wondered what it was even for or who would have allowed the website to active? Well, Web Pages that Suck will point out many websites that are terrible for many different reasons. One of those websites on Web Pages that Suck is “Who Killed JFK?” (http://www.whokilledjfk.net/). This website is terrible because it has WAY too many tabs on the left side and just a bunch of random pictures and information all the way down the front page. It does not seemed to be organized at all. It does not use Emphasis or Simplicity because the information is all completely random and it definitely is not simple, it just makes no sense. This website would need a lot of work to make it usable. The tabs on the left hand side need to be categorized so there a only a few of them and the information needs to be organized. Another terrible website from Web Pages that Suck is “Diller Scofidio + Renfro” (http://www.dsrny.com/#). This website is very touchy and is hard to navigate. It is also hard to figure out what the site is even about and some of the text gets cut off. It does not use Unity or Simplicity because the project links don’t seem to be organized at all and the website is very hard to navigate. They need to have less information on the front page and use the front page to explain their business. It also needs to not be so touchy and hard to navigate.

I really like all of the options that they had, not only for templates, but also the options to customize each template. I also liked how fast and easy it was to create a website. One thing that I would have changed would be to not have so many pop-up notes when you try to change each thing. I know it is supposed to be helpful, but it sometimes gets in the way when there are so many, plus many of them are not needed. Wix is a little confusing at first, but after just a minute or so you can get the hang of it really easily. Overall, I really like this website and will definitely be using it again in the future.
Who doesn’t like taking pictures to share with all of their friends? Most people do, whether it’s where they are, what they are doing, or even what they are eating, and one of the most popular ways to do that right now is Instagram. Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger on October 6, 2010. The main purpose of Instagram is to allow users to take photos or short videos, apply a digital filter, and share it with others. You can also link your Instagram account to other social media sites, which allows your photos and videos to be posted to multiple sites at once. One different thing about Instagram is that it captures photos in a square format, similar to Polaroid photos, instead of the usual rectangular format. On April 9, 2012, Instagram was purchased by Facebook and it now has over 150 million users. I personally like Instagram and use it just for fun. I really like the square format and the different filters, but probably my favorite thing about it is that it focuses on the pictures instead of long stories about your life that some people put on sites, such as Facebook. I could see it also being used in a business setting because you could take pictures of your work, whether it be art projects, design projects, or anything, and showcase them to potential clients/customers. In the end, I give Instagram a thumbs up!
